Tips to Finding the Right Babysitter
by GorgeConnection Staff
Your children are the most valuable thing in your life, so if you're going to leave them with somebody, you better make darn sure that the babysitter is qualified to handle the task. Here's some tips on making sure that you're hiring the proper person for the job:
1. Get references of people this person has babysat for.Call all of them and ask how their experience went.
2. Do a background check. It may be expensive but you can't put a price on the safety of your child. While a background check doesn't guarantee anything, it can surely prevent a potential disaster.
3. Interview the person prior to hiring them. Most people can determine what type a person they're dealing with after a 10 minute conversation. If you have any reservations, DON'T HIRE THE PERSON!
4. Ask if they have any childcare training/experience and if they have CPR certification. A true professional who does child care for a living will have both.
5. Do a Test Run. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the babysitter come into your house on a one hour trial period to see how they interact with your child. The sitter will surely be on their best behavior while you're there, but your gut feeling will let you know if this is going to be a go or not.
6. Pay them accordingly. Most babysitters earn anywhere from minimum wage to ten bucks an hour. This is a field where you get what you pay for. If you find a good babysitter, take care of them so you don't have to go through the nerve-racking experience of having to find somebody new!
Other Notes: Make it clear that no friends are allowed over. Don't be afraid to mention that you have hidden security cameras (even if you don't). One way to express this is to say that you're an overprotective parent and have had bad experienced bad babysitters in the past so you have security cameras that record and that you can access from your mobile phone. Let them know you'll be checking in a few times throughout the day/night to "make sure things are going ok". Yes, it may sound paranoid, but again, you're kids safety is numero uno.
